A short path from the first move to a game you can hold your own in.
Step {number}: First, see which lines exist
Before anything else, learn to see at a glance whether a point has diagonals. Half the board's points do not, and a capture you have carefully planned along a diagonal that is not there is the standard beginner's mistake. The board on this site draws every line, so trust the drawing rather than the geometry you are imagining.
Step {number}: Then, always check both directions
Every time you consider a step, ask two questions: what is in front of me along this line, and what is behind me. Approach and withdrawal use the same move, and beginners routinely see one and miss the other, which is a shame because the withdrawal is usually the bigger capture.
Step {number}: Then, learn when to stop
A chain that takes eight pieces and leaves your capturing piece deep in enemy territory can lose the game. Count what happens after your turn ends, not just what you are collecting during it. Knowing when to stop early is what separates a good fanorona player from an enthusiastic one.
