Surakarta

From Java, the only game in the family where a piece captures by travelling around a loop rather than over an enemy.

In one sentence

Surakarta looks like a simple grid until you notice the eight loops drawn around it. Those arcs are the game. A piece cannot capture by bumping into an enemy; it has to set off along a line, curve round at least one arc, and take the first enemy piece it arrives at.

Everything else is small. Six by six points, twelve pieces a side, and a quiet move is a single step in any direction. But every piece on the board threatens, and is threatened by, pieces it is nowhere near, and learning to see those threats is the whole of the skill.
